| Now Playing: SLAYER - Seasons... (cdr comp) Wow, I'm really digging into the satanical stuff this week, eh? Slayer, Mercyful Fate, Venom... (typical fundie knee-jerk reactionary reactivistics) Nah, not really. I custom made these comps with songs that don't contain these bands' usual and typical deviled green eggs & ham lyrical fare. So, I'm groovin' on their cool sounds without all of the additives! It's like "organic-satanic" with no evil preservatives added and the bones removed! (a.k.a. "castratin' satan") ...oh yeah...he's gone...

Loving You STRYPER - The Yellow and Black Attack (corporate mix) 1. Loud 'n' Clear 2. From Wrong to Right 3. My Love I'll Always Show* 4. You Know What to Do 5. Co'mon Rock 6. You Won't Be Lonely 7. Loving You 8. Reason for the Season* OK, this is my first hearing of the original mix of this Stryper classic (sorry in advance, ghosts - I know you hate them ) and all I can say is WOW! The original mix is so much heavier and GUITAR driven! I've never cared for this album until now. The corporate version is SO watered down compared to this original mix! The only benefit the corporate version has is the addition of two songs* not contained on the original, but I think I'd take this original mix even if it meant losing the two extra songs! I guess I never realized just how much Stryper got castrated once they got big. I know the record companies are notorious for ruining bands, but I also wonder how much the Church had to do with them getting watered down. I mean, even look at the difference in the covers above. The original cover is SO much cooler than the re-issue cover. Same thing happened with the To Hell With the Devil artwork: (original cover) (censored cover) I mean, the original cover was practically a masterpiece! It's definitely in my Top 25 favorite album covers of all time. I bought that album unheard, based solely on the cover art because I loved it so much - and I wasn't even a Christian at the time! (remember the glory days of metal when you could actually get away with that once in awhile without getting burned?) Why would these two excellent covers get changed? My guess is fear and judgment from the Church and perhaps even from the secular record companies. Anyway, that's my rant for today.

| no need to say sorry
I actually loved Yellow and Black and Against The Law
Y&B is the band's best album IMO You can actually hear the bass and when they wrote as a group those are the strongest songs. Oz shines in whatever he writes
I loathe them because Michael Sweet dominated. He is all treble and no low end. There is no balls to his songs or the mixes of Soldiers etc. Like watch Live in Japan and the songs are 100 times better because he doesn't manage to bury everyone else. His voice was too one dimensional, and repeitive for me. Yes I like Styxx but there is a point....
I always liked the guts and stronger masculinity of bands like Barren Cross (sans the glam shots) Vengeance, etc. I was more of an Ozzy, DIO, Maiden guy than Poison, Warrant type. So there it is.
I think if Oz could have had at least equal power the band could have been a million times better

| Yep the original mix of YABA was what my ears first heard back inna day. My brother and I heard "Loud N Clear" on a metal show on the radio and our mouths dropped! That album was then ordered via Enigma mail order in mucho haste! My brother still has the vinyl. Ghosts you and Trog are pretty spot on about how balless Stryper became after their debut although I still like the crunchy high end of SUC. | |

| Yeah, I hear you ghosts. Totally understandable. It's also a VERY RARE occurance that I even want to hear these guys, but getting a cdr copy of that original mix sparked me to pull out their stuff. SUC _was the first album I heard and I have always liked it in addition to THWTD (minus the sicky sweet ballads! ) and after a while I even grew to like IGWT. I'm still not familiar enough with ATL to really give a good opinion on it, but I'll pop it in now and start to remedy that. Last night, I actually replaced all of my original Enigma cd versions of their stuff with the updated Hollywood re-issues. The YABA version on Enigma not only had the crappy mix, but the volume level was WAY low making it even more of a drag to listen to. Now I have the new ones and the kick ass mix of YABA, so I might hang out in Stryperland for a few days - we'll see. I still don't own Reborn yet, though. That might take a little longer for me to explore. I recently got rid of my Michael Sweet solo stuff because it NEVER got played, and I hear this latest Stryper is not all that different from a Sweet (Michael, that is ) solo album. Opinions? Oh, but I *promise* I won't start a thread about them over at CMR! Now Playing: STRYPER - Against the Law (remaster)

Same here, bro. Classic metal like those you mentioned were and are still my faves. I hated most of the hair bands of the day, I guess I just never really put Stryper in the category of Poison and Warrant. Stryper at least had a bit of complexity in their playing - they just happened to LOOK like sissy boys while they were doing it! But let's face it, the Christianity of the band was pretty much the only reason I checked them out in the first place and the nostalgia is the main reason I still listen to them today.

| Sombrant, I didn't mean you had to post every song!! I was just curious about some of the bands / songwriters. I never heard ARTHUR BLESSIT sing! But he's one of the real ones, for sure.. Now Playing.. THE AVETT BROTHERS - MignonetteI went to see the band BR549 and they opened up. I WAS BLOWN AWAY! They destroyed BR549! They are a three piece and they play so hard that their tech has to replace strings on either the banjo or guitar between EACH song!! I mean, I didn't even know the songs, and by the middle of the songs I was singin along. They sing with so much passion that it's contagious and everyone is singing along, I love shows like that, instead of everyone standing around with their arms crossed.. I can't wait to see them again in a week. It's been about a year or more since I saw them last. They are definitely one the BEST live bands going right now.. http://myspace.com/theavettbrothersThey have a couple of videos on their myspace page.. | |
