| My favorite genre and many times it's not too far from doom. In fact, groups like Ashen Mortality, some Mortification and Pantokrator blur the lines a lot. I love it fast and I love it slowed and heavy. | |

That's what scottmitchell won't shut up about. Actually, I am quite a fan of the genre. Obituary. Deicide, Morbid Angel, Monstosity, Akercocke, Lowbrow, old Entombed all tickle my pickle.

| I like Ian Arkley's forays into death mainly, but I also like some of the ENTOMBED I've heard, thanks to Tranny. Other than that, I have a hard time getting into the vocal style unless it's done REALLY well and has some dynamics to it (i.e. Ian Arkley, as I mentioned earlier) because, as a vocalist, I can virtually "feel" things that others sing and if it makes me clutch at my throat in imagined pain while I'm listening to it, I can't take it for long. | |

| I am the exact same way.. vocals can kill it for me. Pretty picky about who I can handle... also people are so anal about the genre that half the time I can't figure out what constitutes death metal....
But I do know this... I can't stand black metal vocals.... just retarded to my ears

| Definitely the vocals are either you love 'em or hate 'em for most people. Hm, maybe my lack of carrying a tune in a bucket is the cause. | |

Which is why I do not like a lot of Death Metal myself.....improper vocal technique seems to be the in thing with a lot of the more "popular" bands. Plus the lack of enounciation really turns me off to a lot of bands. It's like they're born again troglodytes learning to "grunt" for the first time. I used to be BIG into Cannibal Corpse but then realized they werent really all that good and the whole gore thing got boring. Well they were good but more repetative than anything.
I do like Mortification, Obituary, Scourged Flesh and the deathy era of Celtic Frost.

| To answer the thread: yeah, I am a fan of death metal. But I don't like the generic bands. You and I have all heard them ... the bands that basically sound like a watered down version of Deicide, Suffocation, and Morbid Angel all mixed into one & with absolutely no thought put into the musical structure or lyrical themes at all. I think I enjoy about 1 out of every 10 death metal bands I come across. All that said, I do LOVE the great old school death metal bands, before death metal became a trailer park sensation in the early 90's. I also like some of the modern bands, but again, they must still be unique and interesting in order for me to listen to them.
Some death metal bands I like:
MORBID ANGEL - Morbid Angel is the Jimi Hendrix of death metal bands. Their music is absolutely unspeakably great, for reasons that I choose not to ramble about currently. But IMO the best death metal band of all time, both then and now. POSSESSED - ESSSENTIAL ESSENTIAL ESSENTIAL band for both death metal and thrash fans. It's influence cannot be understated. Seven Churches is an all time favorite for me. OBITUARY - Fans of Celtic Frost have NO EXCUSE for not listening to this band! Though the vocal style employed here kept me away for years as well. Great band though. IMMOLATION - very creative and influential band; interesting & unique song structures INCANTATION NIHILIST & early ENTOMBED AUTOPSY early DARKTHRONE - anyone here enjoy Soulside Journey or Goatlord? VADER - the AC/DC of death metal ... these guys just keep going ... it pretty much all sounds the same, and it's all great heavy thrashing old-style death/thrash. I'd highly reccomend the album "The Ultimate Incantation". PESTILENCE - Some good old school death metal
Some runner ups
Suffocation Death Deicide - not really a fan, but they had their moments in their early days. ... I can't really think of many more right now. Personally I don't like the "Gore" death metal much, so you probably won't find much of it in my collection ...
@IG: That's GREAT that your first metal album was a Morbid Angel album ... mine too! Actually I'm not sure if it was the first first first one I ever got, but Morbid Angel's Formulas Fatal to the Flesh was the album ... and it's still one of my all time favorites to this day for its raw power and the fact that the album is heavy as molasses.

| That's a good list though I think Darkthrone has more black metal then death. I agree with the gore thing, it gets tiresome quick though Lair of the Minotaur has some mixed in with their Greek mythology that I don't mind. Two of your runner ups are two of my favorites: Suffocation and Death. You should check out Martyrs Shrine, an album with two ex members of Mortification for some old school death. Anyone like the melo death? I'm a Dark Tranquillity fanboy. | |

Whoa, thats awesome! Formulas Fatal to the Flesh WAS the first one I ever got. It was so heavy, I felt as if I was suffocating the first time I sat down and listened to it! Sweet dood. Formulas is also a VERY well written album from start to finish. It opens perfectly with the awesome "Heaving Earth" right through the 10 minute closer, the name of which escapes me at the moment. Also features some great re-recordings of "Covenant of Death" and "Hellspawn: The Rebirth". I also love the instrumental pieces on that album; some people don't like M.A.'s ambient moments, but I think they are always placed so perfectly within the album to provide 'breaks' from the heaviness that I could not imagine listening to a Morbid Angel record without them. One of the [many] reasons I like Morbid Angel so much is because they are not just about heaviness. They are so good at creating an impression or feeling within a song. I love that they vary the pace of their songs to feature even funeral doom inspired moments (Nothing is Not for example...). Plus Pete Sandoval and Trey Azagthoth have such great chemistry together. It can sometimes feel like I'm listening to a death metal jazz improv session because those guys play off of each other so well.

They are actually my favorite black metal band as well. But I was just referring to their early material as an Entombed-inspired band. Though Darkthrone were unique even in those days. Melo death ... hmmmm reccomend me some good bands because I've heard a number of melo death bands and while I do like some of them (Immortal Souls for example), the genre never really grabbed me as a whole.

Suffocation and Pestilence are two good ones too. I sold off my Pestilence and Suffocation stuff and kinda wished I hadnt. I was in one of those modes where if there was anything on an album that really struck a nerve with me spiritually I got rid of it. Im pretty much past that now but some bands like Deicide I wont give them the time of day.......although their first 2 albums COMPLETELY RAWKED!

I totally understand why people hate on Deicide and I don't want to convert anyone. But I have loved Deicide for 18 years (longer than my wife!) and even if wanted to, I couldn't take Glen's over the top anti christian message seriously. I really think even God is giggling or rolling his eyes at that one.

Glen Benton is a 100% wanker ... and most of the satan-head scenesters will tell you the same thing! I think as far as their sound goes, one could listen to Immolation, Incantation, Suffocation, or any number of early 90's death metal "pioneers" and get the same thing they would get out of a Deicide record, without all the ridiculous drabble-babble. I actually do like Deicide's Legion record however, songs like "Satan Spawn, the Cacodaemon" I just imagine are about the big one-eyed fireball spitting baddy from the world's best video game DOOOOMM!!! BTW your point about "Once Upon the Cross" is interesting because that album, musically, was actually a return to form for them and as such I think is one of the less-bad moments of their career.

Well then this will give you the perfect opportunity to pick up Pestilence's first (and IMO best) album, "Malleus Maleficarum" in its remastered form with 6 bonus tracks from their 2 early demos. The demos are actually really good, though they sounded A LOT like Possessed in those days. About Death -- I actually like Scream Bloody Gore quite a bit, but like I said, the gore thing is a turn off for me and therefore when I listen to bands in this vein I usually go for Possessed, early Pestilence, or "Abominations"-era Morbid Angel over Death.

| Woah, sorry for the triple post doodz, but I just thought I'd mention-- the fans of old-school death/thrash that are comin' out of the woodwork in our subterranean doom-chamber here would do good to check out the band Death Breath. A newer death metal band who plays in the old-school 80's style but with modern production, plus a good Obituary-esque sense of humor throughout their albums. Anyone like?
Also, does anyone here listen to the Nihilist demos? I also think there's some quality death metal there!

Well, there is always the squabble about who really is and who isn't a melo-death band. Like I said, Dark Tranquillity can do no wrong in my book. At the Gates may have defined the movement with it's first couple albums as well as early Carcass though people fight about Carcass fitting the category. Early In Flames had some good moments but I never was as gaga as some people. Arch Enemy is another consistent listen. Nightrage, which had the singer of At the Gates on it's first couple, is another good one. Well stop there for now. Let me know if you listen to any of these and what you think.

| Those of you who dig the really old-school stuff should check out HAIL OF BULLETS, a recent project featuring Martin Van Drunen (PESTILENCE, ASPHYX, and some live shows with BOLT THROWER) on vocals. It's brutally heavy death metal that sounds straight out of 1988-89 or so. Down tuned, chugging, memorable riffs with no blast beats (tempos range from slow and doomy to "fast" in the OBITUARY meaning of the word). The lyrics are all inspired by World War II, specifically battles between Germany and Russia, and it appears as though Martin really did his homework. Killer stuff, and among my favorites of 2008. If you like any of the bands mentioned above, or early ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER, or CELTIC FROST, I think you'll love this stuff. | |

| I like Death Metal, mostly the european bands of the late 80's/early 90's, like Demilich, Entombed/Nihilist, Massacra, Convulse, Bolt Thrower, early Atrocity, Bluuurgh!! (yes, 'twas a dutch band), Excruciation, Mercyless, Agressor, etc...Some US bands also, but always thought euro Death was better (sorry for you US citizens^^), mostly because it was more dark and less gore, I suppose. Also, to saty in Doom and Death : Paramaecium, the aussie Doom/Death legend, is no more, but they've started anew on a pure Death Metal band called InExhordium | |
