| We had a good discussion on the topic of death metal a bit ago ... courtesy of the following post: - Quote :
- My favorite genre and many times it's not too
far from doom. In fact, groups like Ashen Mortality, some Mortification and Pantokrator blur the lines a lot. I love it fast and I love it slowed and heavy. Thought that while we were on the subject, I'd start a thread about my favorite genre, black metal. I believe that black metal is VERY much related to doom. In fact, most black metal bands tend to vary their tempos from very fast to extremely slow. Case in point ... listen to most anything Darkthrone has done. In a bit I'll make a post about my thoughts on black metal, but for now I thought I'd just throw the question out there and get a discussion going. What black metal do you guys like and why do you like it? Is there anyone out there who, like me, enjoy black metal because it is so similiar to doom? EDIT: Changed the "z" in the title because it was driving me nuts

| Lately I've been listening to more doom orientated black metal, and by that I mean the more melodic, atmospheric side of things, rather than the raw sounding stuff. Synnove, Fearscape and Miseration have been high up in my playlist of late. I recently picked up some Dark Lay Still which is quite good. I don't forsake the raw side though, and I own a copy of every single version of everything Horde have currently released | |

| Myself and Phile Diez of Sorrowstorm have a black metal project called Northern Ash, I vary our song dynamics quite a bit. We mix black/thrash and death together, I'm not sure if I added any doom elements to our stuff or not...... http://www.myspace.com/northash | |

http://www.myspace.com/northash Wow, I've done a LOT of research on Christian black metal throughout the years, and my search has yielded a LOT of super-underground projects that most here probably don't know of ... that said, I never knew about this project! I'm listening to it right now though, and I can say that it's pretty decent. I'll keep listening to the rest of it though for a better overview.

Case in point ... anyone here heard of the band CRAFT? They are a great newer (post-2000) black metal act in the vein of early Darkthrone (though without being a ripoff, IMO). They display a lot of the same doom influence that Darkthrone did in their early days.

| Enslaved is one of my favorites of any genre. I also love Satyricon, Ancient, Emperor, Dissection, and Arcturus. There are others I am sure that I can't think of right now. | |

| IronGuardian, do you really think of Miseration as BM? I always thought of them as a modern technical thrash/death. I like some BM, say Dissection and Darkthrone and even some Crimson Moonlight. | |

| Bathory (the fathers for sure..) Dark Throne (carrying the banner!!) Ved Buens Ende (one album and it's classic) Enslaved (Below The Lights rules..) Ulver (early stuff) Root (totally unorthodox with each album) Sigh (another band that progressed with each album)
As far as Christian stuff..
Stronghold (the closet to Darkthrone's sound) Antestor (Especially The Forsaken) Crimson Moonlight (The Covenant Progress) Slechtvalk (The War That Plagues The Land) Arvinger (Helgards Fall) Kekal (started out as black metal and really progressed with each album)

| I used to be a great BM fan, but both the mentality in the scene AND the impressive amount of musical shitte released for the past 10 years simply dropped me out of the genre. Currently I still listen to Enslaved (only the Mardraum and beyond period : Monumension is one of the underrated gems in the genre) Dimmu Borgir (even if they're less and less BM and that their last album was a damn let down) Immortal (better than Darkthrone imo, more ambiances) Arcturus Cradle Of Filth(up until Cruelty And The Beast included) Viking era Bathory Emperor Depressive BM...sorry, but I find that as utterly ridiculous as hateful Doom. I mean, in the basics, BM is about hatred (whatever the one), right? So hearing guys shrieking stuff like My girl left meeeeeeeeeeee And I don't know how to coooooooooooooooooooooooooooooeuargh-ook For the freezer *oh, the freezer* it don't woooooooooooooooooooooorgh-orks!!! And I'm hungrrrrryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy In the cold frost-ridden forest of December I'm so alooooooooooooooooooone I'm gonna slit my wriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiists Because I don't knoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooeuargh-ow How the washing machiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiargh!!! Machine!!! Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooeuaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!!! It works!!!! Well, for that they should play Doom instead imo^^ | |

| Maybe it has to with getting older,I briefly got into some Christian black metal,Antestor would be my fave of those,I would consider Paramecium to be doom/death, but on this subject I am the first to say I don't really know that much about it.I'm not a fanatic but if the lyrics are hail satan style it ruins it ,its not that its "offensive",my opinion on that is that God made the thunder and no matter how loud and blasphemous the band ,is its still like a temper tantrum to Him.I do like the sound. This is an odd statement I know but for me its kind of like broccoli,I mainly prefer it in small amounts, bands like Sirenia,Trail Of Tears and Orphanage use it for effect.I do agree that there is somewhat of a connection with doom, but band for band,IMO ,doom definitely has better lyrics, even when its about a different subject. I can sometimes find a connection, some of the Vitus songs about drinking and drugs can at times pertain to my own thoughts, just that general "black cloud " feeling..Now I would be opened minded toward a band that blended those styles, and wasn't Christian, that had more meaningful lyrics that might somehow pertain to my life or told dark stories objectively, but the truth is I don't really know that much about the genre, teach on Kid Gloom.......... | |

| Thats one of the things I like about the bands I mentioned, there are beautiful female vocals balancing out the shrieks, and yeah.... that possible element too ,is why I want to know exactly whats going on lyrically, some of those bands could bring new meaning to the old Martyr song title.....wait for it......"No Goats" | |

| Since many on this board are Christians, one Ukranian black metal band I know of is the Christian band Evroklidon. Very minimalist, kind of Burzum-influenced slow to mid-paced music as well as a dose of the Transylvanian Hunger type influence. As far as I know, they only have one album -- The Flame of Sodom. It's nothing extremely special, but it's good solid black metal, especially worthwhile for those looking for Christian-themed stuff. Actually, it's in the vein of a lot of the black metal coming from Ukraine, for those who are interested in examining black metal from the standpoint of nationality. | |

| concerning Northern Ash--Never heard of this band! What kind of black metal are they, and is it good, compared to other great black metal bands out there? Honestly dood, I'm VERY picky with my black metal. It is one of my favorite genres, yeah, but there is still a LOT of crappy BM out there that doesn't catch my ear at all ... so just wondering where these guys fall...
concerning Sorrowstorm-- I downloaded their "Complete Works" album a while back when it was available for free on their website. Pretty mediocre stuff, IMO. Typical Brazillian extreme black metal with a dose of Dark Funeral influence ... not really up my alley. They're ok, I guess, when they're not using keyboards, but I honestly didn't like these guys much. The EP was much better than the album though, IMO.

| http://www.myspace.com/northashpreview before you buy melodic black metal with hints of thrash and death metal, though i am not sure where we fall into the genre seeing as how i am not privy to the classifications in teh subgenres. but if we do fall anywhere it is probably somewhere between completely retarded and utterly insane. I write and record all of the music [ that in itself is both retarded and insane lol] so you can expect a ton of melody and some genre cross contamination in the form of thrash and death metal. | |

...And Oceans (early) Borknagar Dark Fortress Crimson Moonlight Equilibrium (sorta folk-black) Kampfar Frosthardr Drottnar Immortal Horde Naglfar Tidfall
I think black metal is loaded with fantastic metal musician, although it can be a bit difficult to take the genre seriously at times, I think that in particular a lot of the satanic imagry is an act.
