| Anyone else out there diggggg this genre as much as I do? I've pretty much been in love with instrumental rock since I first heard mr. Joe Satriani himself a few years ago when I was getting into guitar playing. So I guess you could call me a relative noob to this genre (about 3 yearz...). I love 70's instrumental rock from Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck, Robin Trower, Jimi Hendrix etc. But I also love its revival with Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and others, then on to guys like Marty Friedman and Jason Becker (AWESOME!) who were following in the footsteps of Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads, Richard Blackmore, etc. The Shrapnel guys are great also--Vinnie Moore, Tony MacAlpine, an a bunch more ... One thing is this--I've not checked out much 60's or 50's instrumental rock ... I should get on that! I know of a few artists but haven't gotten around to checking into them yet. Anyone else love (or approve of ) this genre?? | |

| I LOVE all the artists you mentioned dOOg, but I prefer a mix of vocals and instrumentals!
Few artists can keep my attention for an entire album without some vocals! AND many of those often or sometimes mix in vocals as well! Such as Vai & Satriani!
Some of the few that can pull of whole albums of Instrumentals are Jeff Beck and Carlos Santana, but most of their albums are not Instrumental!
Alot of the others you mentioned have great Instrumental tracks, but not entire albums! Trower & Hendrix!
For those who do only Instrumental, my favs are Vinnie Moore(check him out in UFO), Tony McAlpine(Now Touring in Vai's Band) and (The 1st one I will mention that you did not)Gary Hoey!
Another current artist that is 1/2 & 1/2 Vocal & Instrumental is Eric Sardinas, who is a Blues Steve Vai! In fact, I 1st heard/saw him open for Vai!!!
BTW, dOOg, this reply is meant to be complimentary to your thread!!!

Actually, those are the exact same artists that I thought of when I saw the thread. All of those Shrapnel guys were talented, but these guys were also fantastic song writers.

Yeah, there are a number of guys (and some gals!) I didn't mention, but I mainly listed my favs. Another band that does some really great instrumentals is the thrash band Coroner. Anyone else dig? BTW, I'm surprised that this thread got even less replies than my rap thread did. I guess doom fans are more prone to rap enjoyment than instrumental rock??? Hmmmmm

| I used to love, and still greatly respect, all the old "shred" stuff from back in the day...McAlpine, Moore, Becker, Friedman, etc... These days, I prefer more ambient stuff like Explosions In The Sky & Red Sparowes.... | |
