Now, I'm not HUGE into this genre, but recently I've really gained an
ear for this type of music. The only bands in the genre I've heard so
far are:

Tyranny (A personal fav, I've got everything from this band in CD-R form)
Ahab (Call of the Wretched Sea is awesome!)
Ocean (need to give these guys a few more listens before passing judgement ...)
Wormplegm (kvlt, as they say ...)

and I like all four of them. Anyone else into this stuff? Any good recommendations?

THROUGH THE VALLEY is the only band I have and know from this genre.

Definitely an acquired taste.

Never heard them. I didn't know there was ANY Christian funeral doom out there!

I'm really starting to like this genre because of the 'spatial sense' it gives off ... Tyranny
is probably the best example of this quality that I've heard.
Completely comprised of MASSIVE riffing and MASSIVE lyrical themes
which seem to center on obsessiveness and the unknown. Many times, it's
the mental image that the band's sound creates that really pulls me in.
Supernatural images of lumbering giants and monstrous sea-creatures.
It's not so much the 'monster riff' in the Sabbath-ean sense as much as
it's the monster SONG or the monster CONCEPT.

Another one I've been meaning to check out is this one:

BTW, you're a readin man, aren't you Trogg? You may want to check into Ahab.
I only recently got their CD, but I was almost instantly hooked. The
Call of the Wretched Sea is a concept album based on the story and
themes dealt with in the book Moby Dick. Self-described 'Nautik
Funeral Doom'. The musical style and extended spatial passages between
songs perfectly illustrate, in a musical sense, the monstrous,
terrifying, and obsessive themes of the story. It's an intriguing and
well-executed idea, IMO.

AHAB is awesome, indeed! And OCEAN is excellent as well. Slower than slow, sludgier than sludge, and they're from my town, to boot.

CONIFER is another band you might want to check out. Not necessarily funeral doom per se, but huge, slow, and dirge-like. They definitely capture that "spatial sense" to which you referred.

Tyranny and Wormphlegm = Both of them are same band members, and i think they are failed to prove themselves as creative funeral doom bands; both albums are mostly based on three or four riffs and similar chords.

I wouldn't define Ocean as funeral doom, but a great band nonetheless.

Now, Ahab is really something. Not only because i'm a huge Moby Dick fan, album really shows how one person could be such obsessive and bring his own doom. Great musicianship, best calibre riffs, slow and doom. What more can i say?

Some reccommanditons: Skepticism, Shape of Despair, Mournful Congregation, Monolithe.

Wow, I'm glad you guys all like Ahab so much. What a monster of an
album, hah? I've listened to it a million times and never get tired of
it. It's really a masterpiece.

Another funeral doom band I keep hearing about is Worship. I've never heard them, though ... anyone know anything?

About Tyranny/Wormphlegm. I guess it depends on whether or not you like
their atmosphere. For example, I doubt any of us here would refer to Beherit
as 'musicians' ... but I LOVE Beherit nonetheless. I understand where
you're coming from, Evoked, but I don't see what being able to refer to
someone as a musician has to do with liking their music or not ...

Worship is average, good band, nothing special though.

About Tyranny again:

Well, actually, to be honest, I appreciate the atmosphere, and i enjoyed their album, but after listening 3 riffs lasting about 15 friggin minutes, i enjoyed their album only at first two spin. There is nothing to discover anymore. At least, for me.

But, normally, when talking about music, i personally think music is songs with choruses, not atmospheric ambient soundscapes. And if i like a solo or a spesific riffing part on a song too much, i might replay this song again. (For example, there is a great part on first song of Mourning Beloveth's The Sullen Suncus). But this is something you don't have to do when hearing Tyranny, because song is repeating three riff melody, turning into another riff only two or three times.

Ok, saying that they are not musicians might be too much, but i think they aren't very creative.

However, our perspective might be different about definition of music, so i see your point too.

Good, welcome again. Feel free to change your avatar if you like, I always provide one if it's left blank. Usually something undesirable to provide incentive for new users to add their own. Evile

The top small avatar goes with your member level based on your post count. I tried to make it as small as I could (without it being too small to see) so it wouldn't take up too much space. At a certain point, you get to choose whether it's even there or not.

I tried to build a few surprises into the board, like the old d-m.com used to have. I miss that old board. Frown
