Ten years ago today, the world lost an amazing singer/songwriter. John Denver was killed when his Long-EZ airplane crashed at Pacific Grove on October 12, 1997.
When I was a boy, my parents had purchased one of those little Mickey Mouse record players for me... along with a couple of 45's.. "Sunshine on my Shoulders" and "Take Me Home, Country Roads". I loved John Denver! My first concert ever was John Denver at the Checkerdome in St. Louis. It was 1976 and I was 7 years old. I still have the program for it!
I've always tended towards dark or moody music. But John Denver had a way of putting a smile on my face. His beautiful songs about the wonders of nature dance through my head every time I go hiking.
He was one of a select few 'happy' artists that I really enjoyed listening to and couldn't allow my cynicism to taint!
I remember the radio anouncement reporting that he had passed away. I actually cried righ there in my office...
John... you are missed! There will never be another one like you! I hope you are in heaven and in awe of the scenery. Maybe you've said "far out" a few times up there too!
peace and love,
