| The proto-Therion? I would recommend Birds Of Prey to any prog-leaning metalhead.
As far as other jazz-prog greats, I would also recommend Weather Report, post-bebop Miles Davis, and Return To Forever/Chick Corea, depending on your relative THC levels...

| Haven't heard John McLaughlin and the MO for a LONG time and I don't own any. I might just have to check out the one you recommended. Have you ever heard John's work with SHAKTI? Good stuff... | |

| I haven't heard Shakti, but I need to...
Mahavishnu have influenced everyone from symphonic rock bands, to stuff like Bad Brains (who quote them as an influence, though I don't really hear it...)

| I know Gregg Ginn was REALLY into MO.. I can see the influence in his guitar playing on later Black Flag records.. | |

his guitar playing on later Black Flag records.. Gregg Ginn had awesome taste, in my opinion; he loved lots of very not-punk bands, such as ZZTop and Dio-era Black Sabbath. I've heard Henry Rollins talk about him wearing those tapes out on the road over and over again... )+( | |

| That amuses me because to me, back inna day, Black Flag were the anti to all that was my metal world. If I was 15 again, my mind would melt knowing Greg was jamming out to Dio era Sabbath! | |

| Yeah Greg alienated alot of people. Even then. Black Flag were front and center but hardly fit even the hardcore mold. I think it is safe to say that while Sham 69 birthed the band's sound by the time of my war, Greg was listening to almost nothing but metal. | |

| Mahavishnu (the first two, and Trident sessions) and his stuff with Miles Davis is my favorite John McLaughlin material. Especially the first Mahavishnu is amazing. 'Birds of Fire' usually gets more praise, and is slightly more progressive in parts, but 'Inner Mounting Flame' just doesn't seem to have a bad second on it... | |
