| I always been a fan of this sub-genre of Doom but just became a bigger fan after receiving the entire catalog of releases from Solitude Productions. Any opinions ? | |

| I have to admit i am abit indifferent to this genre, or should i rather say; this self-imposed restriction in diversity of moods/emotion channeled through a band's music.
Even though one of the bands I have played in (Implacable), have been diagnosed as funeral death/doom, and there definitely are some gems in the genre (Ahab and Funeral in particular), in general I find that the product of a band that sits down and intentionally produce something as narrow as "funeral doom" more often than not ends up as somewhat dull and repetitive. This is naturally very subjective, but I have tried to get into bands like Skepticism, Swallow the Sun & Shape of Despair, and I simply can't seem to "get" it. I tried to force feed myself with "Farmakon" when it came out, to no avail. Even though I by all means were in the "optimal" receptive mindset for this kind of music at the time, depressed and suicidal. But I honestly find more diverse bands like Anathema or even Pink Floyd far better at expressing and stirring these emotions that funeral doom "specializes" on; bleakness, hopelessness, despair, sadness...
The above is of course a bit of a general "rant" against too narrowly defined musical genres of expression, but for some reason or other I find that issue more pressing and actual when it comes to "funeral doom" than most other genres. (Probably because my own expression is somewhat bordering on and overlapping this area) | |

| Yes i know exactly what you are saying. Funeral Doom can be very dull and boring especially if you are not in the mood for it. I think however it takes a special skill to play Funeral Doom and make it interesting whether it be from a emotional aspect or a musical aspect. Some bands nail it while other bands just sound cliche, just being depressing without conveying any real message. Its a acquired taste but one i find moving and inspiring when done right. | |

| AHAB is the only band I'm familiar with that would be considered funeral doom... I love The Call of the Wretched Sea, and am planning to pick up the new one soon. I didn't realize SWALLOW THE SUN were funeral doom. I'll have to look into them as well... Anybody heard Through The Valley? I think they have a page in the CDA room here at the cave. Pretty good stuff. | |

| The main problem i have with Funeral Doom is so many bands sound the same. I recently got a promo package from the Russian label Solitude Productions and at least 10 of the bands sound just like each other. You literally can't the tell the difference between them. | |

| I'm not that keen on it. have to agree with ed though, it's good when done well. I like the Count Raven / Saint Vitus / pentagram style. that's Doom to me. And of course all Sabbath. |

| I think Funeral Doom and Drone Doom are the hardest styles of doom to play and make it interesting. Usually most bands that attempt it come off sounding tedious and dull but there is some exceptions where bands do it justice. | |

| Speaking of AHAB... After the opening melodies of Yet another raft of Medusa... I felt as if the body were reduced to a shapeless jelly of flesh and crushed bones ... floating somewhere far out in the deep deep blue sea... I haven't been as awestruck by an album opener in a very long time! Have to spin the album a few times more before I get the full feel of it, but so far it sounds promising indeed. | |
