As a general rule, I'm not a huge fan of this band, but they do have their moments.

I got burnt out on them. My friends and I played Carnival Bizarre to death back in 96/97.

Oh yeah, first time I heard that song I was like "why can't all of their stuff be this cool?!?!?" I'd be a HUGE fan if it was. That EP is the best thing I've heard out of them. Most of their stuff just sounds (and looks) like they're trying way too hard, IMO.

Their debut is the only one that stuck with me over the years. But the Soul Sacrifice EP is pretty killer as well. Then they focused on being Sabbath clones a bit too much. However, not as much as Count Raven did. Easy Shawn, I like Count Raven.

I'm sure I'll give them further chances along the way since, after all, they are a DOOM band, which automatically puts them out in front of 90% of all the rest of the bands on the planet.

Forest of Equilibrium is a good album. I also like the Statik Majik and Soul Sacrifice eps. Good stuff but I burnt myself out a bit on them too.

FOE is the only one I could fully get into and even that there seemed something missing. Good song here and there but not consistent.

I really like that album even though it is a depart from their doomier stuff.
Endtyme is a good album too. I do dig it when Im in the mood for some Cathedral.

CATHEDRAL SHOWS AND ALBUM IN THE NEW YEAR!
Confirming recent speculation, Cathedral are excited to announce their first live appearances in almost eighteen months! They have just been added to the bill of this years Damnation Festival in Leeds (http://www.damnationfestival.co.uk/frames.html) on Saturday 22nd November.
They will also appear the following week at the Gunfest in Oslo, which takes place between 27-29th November. More details to follow.
The band will shortly begin finalising material for their Ninth studio album to be released by Nuclear Blast some time in the New Year.
A deluxe vinyl /CD edition of In Memoriam is to be released shortly through Rise Above.

I've always had very mixed feelings about Cathedral. I have never been able to make up my mind whether they take themselves seriously...or are just a total joke band...in a "Monty Python humor" kind of way. There seems to be evidence of both scattered throughout their discography.
They also are one of the most inconsistent bands on the planet, one of those groups that have a hard time making a solid album all the way through, I always end up making playlists of their stuff so I can cherrypick the good tracks.
I picked up the majority of their recordings from emusic. If I had to pick a favorite it would be Caravan Beyond Redemption.

My faves are:
The Forest Of Equilibrium Endtyme The VIIth Coming
Those have thier most bombastic, Doomy-est moments IMO and are lighter on the hippie "Oh YEAH!!!" vibe...
Haven't heard enough of Garden Of Unearthly Delights (or not enough times)...I need to break that one out...

Imo all their disco' is consistent in their evolution. You can listen Garden... and Forest..., and still you'll recognize it's the same band. Hard for me to pick a fave album, so I'll go for The Carnival Bizarre if for nothing else than Vampire Sun (Tony Iommi solo FFS!!), Hopkins and Night Of The Seagulls (more spanish zombie templar madness, I say!!)

I just picked up The Carnival Bizarre at the record store today... an Earache re-release in a special edition that comes with the Our God Has Landed DVD as a bonus. Very excited to check this out ASAP... but alas, sleep is calling my name at the moment.
Oh, and I suppose I'd probably have to pick either Endtyme or VIIth Coming as my favorite. Love the super slow early stuff too... really dig all their stuff, but the two I mentioned tend to top the list. And I agree that The Garden... is very good as well.

I haven't watched the live show yet, but the video clips are all pretty decent quality, and some of them are very interesting visually... quite trippy, as you might expect from Cathedral. Hoping to watch the live part this weekend... will get back to you on that. My local record store had the reissue for $10 - the video clips alone are worth that.

New album due out March 2010. Songs for inclusion are 'Journeys Into Jade', 'The Casket Chasers', 'Funeral Of Dreams', 'Death Of An Anarchist', 'La Noche Del Buque Maldito (aka Ghost Ship Of The Blind Dead)' and 'Open Mind Surgery' among others. The album is going to be called "The Guessing Game" and i have been promised a promo copy for late January and i cant wait. Its been too long between drinks for this band but how can they follow up "The Garden Of Unearthly Delights" ?

You lucky bastard! Can't wait to get my hands on this! I don't worry too much if they'll top The Garden... or not; unless they have completely lost their mojo in the intervening years, I know it will be a quality album that I will most probably spin countless times, just as all their previous efforts.

You can argue that Lee Dorrian's vocals are not too good but its hard to question their lyrical ideas. They have always had cool concepts for songs.
