PostSubject: another "anyone like?": hip hop & rap??   Fri Feb 29, 2008 1:40 am

Of course rap music wasn't really written for me, was it??

(I'm of course speaking regardless of the humorous statistic that we
all know: 70% or more of rap sales are middle class white male young
adults)

But sometimes my past experience with music makes it such that I can't
help but feel the groove and punk-like attitude of artists like N.W.A.,
Ice Cube, and Eazy-E, A Tribe Called Quest, Tupac, and sometimes the
Geto Boys and a few others. I also have gotten into as well as some
underground stuff here and there like The Bloods. The occasional modern
rapper also catches my ear. I tend to like The Game, C-Murder, and a
couple others ... but mostly I like the old school stuff because I like
the elements of groovy jazz and r&b that come through in the old
stuff.

Anyone else like "golden age" hip hop and rap? Or any kind of rap, really?

Discuss! Furious Furious Furious Furious Furious Furious

I liked it in the 80's before the "gangsta rap" infection. I liked Eric B. and Rakim the most. Loved them!

I don't really like hiphop and rap.
I do like watching people breakdance.

Oh yeah, oldschool rap is great! I only know a few bands though. The
Sugarhill Gang is great & classique ... I also like Grandmaster
Flash, The Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, Run-DMC (which has made for
a very ridiculous yet strangely interesting VH1 TV-show ... or was it
MTV?? I don't keep track of these things...) and some others whose
names are escaping me right now.

EDIT: BTW, I'm surprised how many of you answered in the affirmative!! I had no idea anyone else here dug rap.

We should start up a freestyle thread in the nonsense room ...

My hypothesis on the subject is this:

There is no style of music about which there is nothing good to say.
MOST styles of music are saturated by bad ripoffs and copycats ... and
you must dig to find the true innovators and the gems. Rap is no
exception. For a middle class white guy like myself, gangsta culture is
a world away. But I find that if I respect the fact that it truly
wasn't written for people like me, then I can enjoy the attitude of it,
as I said above.

Plus there's always somethin to be said for some good dope beetz and lyrical skillz, word?

I like some old RUN DMC or PUBLIC ENEMY in small doses, but for the most part, I spell rap with a "c". Winky

Youll find copycats and ripoffs in most music but i think its more so in Rap

There are some good ones out there Not many but a few good ones, not counting the Old Skool though like Beasties and RUN DMC
