PostSubject: The Darkness   The Darkness Icon_minitimeTue Jan 08, 2008 7:02 pm

I know they've been around for a few years now, and when I first saw their first video in 2003, I dismissed them as goofball-posers. Rolling Eyes

But I got to hear their debut and some of their other stuff just last week for the first time and I am totally digging them ! GEEN!

I remember a lot of people were hailing them as "the return of 80's metal" but I don't hear them that way at all. In fact they sound more to me like a perfect cross between Queen, Thin Lizzy, Cheap Trick, AC/DC and Sweet! (in other words, not "80's" at all, but TOTAL 70's worship!Peace out!)

Damn! This is good stuff! Any other fans? Troggish

I wondered the other day what happened to them.. I dig it.. totally agree on the 70s thing too. As a matter of fact the big radio hit's guitars reminded me most of Boston

Sometimes, a lot of cussing bugs me, but other times it doesn't. I think it's the context. i.e. Dee Snider's cussing is practically an art form and it's FUNNY to boot, so it doesn't get under my skin, but Zakk Wylde's constant "MF this" and "MF that" onstage is irritating because it's overdone for no good reason it seems - other than to perpetuate his already canned/prefab image. Same goes with George Carlin's later comedy work because he is so bitter now that he's older and his cussing is so caustic that I wince whenever I hear it and can't really listen to it like I can his earlier work. But with The Darkness, hearing him sing variations of the word "fuck" in that high falsetto is just hillarious to me, so it doesn't bother me either. I guess it depends on the intention and anger/aggression level of the user as to whether or not it is offensive to me or not. The actual words are secondary to the emotions or spirit behind it I guess - if that makes any sense.

Or, they also have the edited versions of their two albums available which bypasses the entire issue! Big Smile

I guess they've hung it up (possibly due to drug issues with the singer?) and the three remaining guys have formed a new band called The Stone Gods recently. I haven't heard them tho.

I hear you on the swearing though.. like sometimes it just fits
Case in point most Throwdown songs

but other times... it is just lame especially high school swearing

Like any live clip with Phil Anselmo!!! I mean that is what just turned me off about him. In the beginning he was ok but somewhere between Cowboys and Vulgar it just got too juvenile and retarded to take. I can dig some of his stuff but live ir interviews?? nope. There is a band in Seattle called Hatefist. I think they blow one of the local promoters because I dont know how they keep getting gigs... anyhow they are a really bad Phil Anselmo wanna be band. The singer thinks he is Phil. And the swearing is like a 6 year old.. to the point where it doesnt even make sense. Watching them open for a gig at Studio Seven once was one of the most painful things ever. Honestly by the end of it I was just embarassed for them and sadly they lacked the sense to be embarassed themselves. They really thought they were that cool.

01. Best of Me
02. How Dare You Call This Love?
03. Bareback
04. Makin' Out
05. Physical Sex
06. Out of My Hands
07. Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End)
08. I Love You 5 Times
09. Planning Permission
10. Curse of the Tollund Man
11. Grief Hammer
12. Wanker
13. Shit Ghost
14. Shake (Like a Lettuce Leaf)

WAY UP!

Man! I am digging on their second album also! It's got a higher production value and sounds a lot more mature than the debut, so it might not grab you as quickly, but if you give it a chance, there is some awesome material on here!

I've been playing "Hazel Eyes" on repeat all day long! I can't get enough of that song!Manic

Hazel Eyes...

The Darkness 11787122uo3

I hail from the flatlands of East Anglia
A town that once could boast prosperity
She had trekked for many moons from a land afar
But the cruel nets had emptied the northen sea

And she said "Hoots, I cannae get back tae
me hoos in bonny Scotland"

Girl with the hazel eyes - Aaaaah!
Girl with the hazel eyes - Aaaaah!

The elements had taken their toll on her
Her face was weather beaten and her hair greasy
I had never seen a set of eyes more hazelerer
And a tear did fall as she looked up at me

And said, "Hoots, I cannae get back tae
me hoos in bonny Scotland"

Girl with the hazel eyes - Aaaaah!
Girl with the hazel eyes - Aaaaah!

I shall travel with thee
For to see your folks in Scotland
With their blessing, on one knee
I shall ask for your left hand

Girl with the hazel eyes - Aaaaah!

Girl with the hazel eyes - Aaaaah!
Girl with the hazel eyes - Aaaaah!
Girl with the hazel eyes - Aaaaah!

I shall travel with thee
For to see your folks in Scotland
With their blessing, on one knee
I shall ask for your left hand...

Thank the makers someone who thinks the same as I do about Mr. Viking metal/binge drinker/Im so cool cuz Im tuff but really lost and weak but wont dare admit it because I have to be tuff and all metal Wylde.

Anyhoo back to the Darkness. I have the debut and I should really go back and listen to it because it was a good cd and I got used to the vocals.....I think I might have gotten rid of it but I could be wrong.

I liked The Darkness alot! Great campy retro fun! The 2nd album is indeed a more mature effort! I LOVE them both!!!

I searched for Stone Gods and found a MySpace page with samples! Same retro vibe with a more Dee Snider vocal style! I would like to get this when it comes out!
