| I'm relapsing on these guys recently !!! Machine Head is one of my all-time favorites (especially the 2-disc with the remaster and the remix), but I love a large body of this band's work. Thought I'd create a thread for them ... Anyone care to comment? What are your favorites? | |

| Yep! Awesome band! And it was actually the Coverdale/Hughes lineup that I first heard. It was the live version of "Burn" from Made in Europe that first hooked me! So, you left out two of my personal faves from your post: | |

| It rules! Great live stuff! It's the first album I ever heard from them. I think it's been released as an extended set, but I can't remember the title... | |

| Suggested pickups for zombiefriedchicken: In RockMade in JapanMade in EuropeDeepest Purple or The Very Best of Deep Purple (on Rhino) That'll give you a good purple fix until you get the remainder of the catalogue. | |

| Yes, Fireball is also a must have, but if you get the original American release, it is missing the song "Demon's Eye", which is an essential song to have! I think the remastered/expanded version has it, but if not, you can get it on The Very Best of Deep Purple collection on Rhino. | |

| I actually have the expanded version, and the song Demon's Eye is on there. It's one of my favorites!
I've actually been trying to find the ever elusive expanded version of In Rock for quite some time. I think it wasn't released in the US ... why? I have no clue.

| Made in Japan and Made in Europe are both killer live sets from the Gillan and Coverdale lineups respectively! | |

| I find them very soft compared to other late 60's stuff (Cream, Cheer, Hendrix, etc.) | |

That's probably because they had so much organ/keys at the forefront along with the guitar, as opposed to being mainly guitar-driven like the others you mentioned. They still had some pretty damn heavy moments though.

| I LOVE Purple from the beginnings with Rod Evans(his best work is with Captain Beyond) to the famous Mach II and MIII Coverdale era, BUT, Let's not ignore Tommy Bolin, the 1st to step into Blackmore's shoes, although Tommy only recorded 1 studio album (Come Taste the Band) and one Live Opus before his untimely death, he made his mark with Purple, James Gang and Solo! More a musician's musician, his influence has lived on!!! | |

| I love the Mark 1 & 2 line-ups of purple but always had a problem with the Coverdale/Hughes line-up. Burn was a good album but after that they lost their edge. I like the current line-up with Morse on guitar although sometimes i think he over-plays too much especially on the old songs. He is the only Purple guitarist i have heard that can destroy Smoke On the Water with his Jazz flourishes. | |
