The only bands I know of that fall into this category are MINOR THREAT and my friend's old band POSITIVE OUTLOOK.

Does anybody else know of any other Straight Edge bands?

For those who don't know, Straight Edge is a genre of punk that carries a philosophy of "clean living" for the purpose of keeping one's mind free to reach it's potential. It was exemplified in the lyrics of the songs "Straight Edge" and "Out of Step" by MINOR THREAT:

Quote :
I'm a person just like you
But I've got better things to do
Than sit around and f**k my head
Hang out with the living dead
Snort white sh*t up my nose
Pass out at the shows
I don't even think about speed
That's something I just don't need

I've got the straight edge

I'm a person just like you
But I've got better things to do
Than sit around and smoke dope
'Cause I know I can cope
Laugh at the thought of eating ludes
Laugh at the thought of sniffing glue
Always gonna keep in touch
Never want to use a crutch

I've got the straight edge
Quote :
Don't smoke
Don't drink
Don't f**k
At least I can f**king think

I can't keep up
Can't keep up
Can't keep up
Out of step with the world

Cashing in.

Wow, I've never heard of any of those bands! Shocked

The thing I like about the SE lifestyle is that it was so diametrically opposed to what the rest of the punk scene was like at the time. And it sure beat kids killing themselves with drugs. Neutral

But I'm not exactly gonna go and sign up either. I no longer drink (doesn't mix well with my meds) and I haven't fired up a bowl in probably 15 years, but it's still a little extreme for my tastes. The music is cool though! WAY UP!

I am only a moderate drinker, but I think sXe is a great thing for the kiddies to be involved in. My 10 year says he is straight edge, tee hee. I tell em go for it! Just don't trip on me when I am enjoying a beer or drink. I encourage him to go for it. What parent wouldn't want their kid committed to no alcohol, drugs, or premarital sex!!! hahaha

What's funny was all those HARDCORE straight edgers covering their
bodies with tattoo's like "Straight Edge 4 LIFE" or just Straight Edge
tattoos and now you see them in bars drinking or smoking out.. Laughing

Troggy, if you're still interested in checking out more straight edge bands, I'd highly recommend GORILLA BISCUITS ("Start Today") and YOUTH OF TODAY ("Break Down the Walls" and "We're Not in This Alone"). Both played fast, raw hardcore punk, though the GORILLA BISCUITS were a bit more polished (relatively speaking) and were definitely better musicians. A couple of the dudes from GB went on to form QUICKSAND.

My big beef (pun intended, as most of 'em are vegetarian too) with the straight edge "philosophy" is that it's often taken to an extreme and becomes very self righteous. Before looking into it too deeply, it almost seems to go hand in hand with some Christian ideals (self control, treating the mind and body well), but looking at some of those bands' lyrics it's clear that it can sometimes just become justification for thinking and acting like you're better than everyone else... a bit too pharisee-ish for me.

One of my roomates this semester LOVES punk! He was introducing me to
all these old school straight edge bands the other day ... but there
were so many that I forgot them all. If you like Minor Threat then you
will love some of these bands. Ill have to ask him to hook me up w/
some band names and album titles for ya!

Personally I find it hilarious the way many punk bands have to have a
cause. Have you heard any of the "animal rights" punk bands? They're
pretty much all waaay underground (at least to my knowledge) but it's
hilarious!

There's some other bands out there with some other pretty humorous
"causes" as well. But I guess that always was the punk philosophy,
wasn't it? Complain about all the injustices in life, drink a lot of
beer, smoke some pot and some crack ... pass out, wake up the next day,
never actually ACT on any of the causes the band has ... funny.

Minor Threat is one of my favorite bands. Some other straight edge bands that I know of include Hit The Deck, xLooking Forwardx, Call To Preserve, Champion (I think were SxE), xDeathstarx (a bit more metallic/metalcore though-still very good), State Of Alert, Cause for Alarm, Chain of Strength, Youth of Today, Undertow, Strife, Casey Jones, Ten Yard Fight, Have Heart.

Minor Threat is good but i never could get into the straight edge bands due to alot of them having elitist attitudes, This isnt a blanket statement since i have met some who are pretty cool

I almost killed one of those karate dancer guys at a Dark Funeral show in 05 because he was inches from kicking my ex wife in the face, these guys dont pay attention to anyone around them, it makes me sick because back in the day if you would have tried that karate dancing shit at a pantera show phil himself would have got off the stage and beat you down
