Here's a little info on the recording of 'Into The Unknown'...
'Into The Unknown' was actually recorded during the summer of '93. When we finished the recording, we all loved it and went to go meet with Michael Black at Frontline.
Michael told us the album was “too dark and heavy for the Christian music scene!”
We were shocked and very discouraged! So we decided to scrap the recording and set aside the master.
During the fall of '93, we started recording the 'Next' album, we re-wrote some of the songs off of the 'Black Album' and wrote some new ones and came up with a killer recording. We were very excited!
The 'Next' album had a very dynamic sound with a lot of heaviness mixed in with some killer melodies and feel!!! This was personally my favorite recording we did!!! In fact, Jason Martin was hanging around a lot during the recording of the 'Next' album and a lot of the feel and sound wound up on the recording of his new project, Starflyer 59's first album!
A couple days before we were to meet up at Frontline to turn in the master, Randy was playing a couple of the songs on the acoustic guitar a la' 'Unplugged' style! He told me that we should re-record the 'Next' album with an 'Unplugged' feel. So we called Michael Black and told him we needed one more week.
So the 'Next' album was scrapped and 'Crazy Little World' was born. This recording took place early winter of '93! The band members were going through a very rough period during the recording of 'CLW', with divorce, close family members committing suicide and all...and it was reflected on the album! 'Crazy Little World' contains a lot of heartbreak and sadness...
We turned in the recording and had it mastered at Capitol Records. Frontline loved it and released 'Crazy Little World' during the spring of '94!
Unfortunately, Frontline started to go bankrupt during '94. Frontline originally signed us to a five album deal and 'CLW' was the fifth and final release for Frontline, as the didn't renew our contract.
R.E.X. Records became interested in signing Rose...and did for a one album deal! Since we already had a complete full-length recording sitting on the shelf with the 'Black Album', we gave them that!
R.E.X. Records released 'Into The Unknown' in the summer of '95. A tour was talked about to support the release but a couple of us were busy with recording Mad At The World's 'Dreamland Cafe'!
Take care,
Mike
