Mike Link is the former bass player for ROSE from the Healing album up through Into the Unknown. Although ROSE is disbanded, Mike is still very active in the music scene, so pick his brain to your heart's content! Welcome to The Cave, Mike!

Hey Mike, gonna put you on the spot just a little bit here: Any idea why Randy left the doom scene for various and sundry genres? The stuff ROSE did is among my favorite material within Christian music circles, and it was done so well! Why did it have to end?

Rose played a gig with Mortification, Living Sacrifice and Wickeds End and at this gig while we were playing, the moshing got way out of hand by a few metalheads and to calm them down Randy gave them this killer beanie he was wearing. They were ruining everyones time and it discouraged Randy a lot!!! This was during the summer of '93, while we were recording the 'Black Album' which is known as 'Into The Unknown'. We did an interview with 'Heavens Metal' magazine a little later in which Randy discussed his feelings about the heavier side of the scene. There's a bit more info on this time of Rose in another thread here. Thanks, Mike

Is that interview available online? I'd love to post it in here, or a link to it. I'd even type it up by hand if I could get a copy of it. Do you remember what issue it was in? |

Next question: What is the story behind you guys using the intro to TROUBLE's song "R.I.P." as the intro to the Healing album? I can't find any credits for it inside the CD sleeve. Did you guys just sort of use it "on the sly" or did you actually have permission from TROUBLE to use it? Or is it something else entirely? Awesome choice for an intro, by the way.

Ahhh...you're going to get me into trouble here (pun intended)!!! I have always loved 'Trouble', especially 'The Skull' album!!! While we were recording 'Healing', I suggested to Randy let's use this as our opener...so we recorded it!!! So there is no credits given...our bad!!! *laughs* Not too many people knew or heard of 'Trouble' back then! I believe you are one of a handful of people who have actually recognized that! We used 'R.I.P.' for our opener on gigs! I've got a few gigs recorded on VHS.

I've always been a big TROUBLE fan too, so I saw it as a tip of the hat to those guys when I realized what it was, and I have a feeling that they would see it in much the same way if they heard it. It's not like you guys used the whole song, just enough for it to be cool, but not a rip off, IMO.

OCD can unlock the secrets of the Universe, you know.

I'm sure that was a killer opener. Wish I could have experienced it live for myself.
Missing albums, demo material and gigs on VHS too? You're killing me, Mike!

Trog...over the next week or so I will gather up some stuff and make copies for ya!!! You'll get a big kick out of some of the video though!!! Like when we were hangin' with Jimmy Brown of Deliverence and the guys from The Crucified and we were jamming some Slayer in a church!!! It was hilarious...and of course, Jimmy's laughter is infectious!!! Mike
