AAARGH!

So, the only band that fits the "funeral doom" tag that I am familiar with is AHAB, and I really dig 'em. So, who is familiar enough with this sub-genre to mention some other bands that are worth checking out? As a bit of a caveat, I typically don't get into bands that go too far into the satanic/occultic territory lyrically, unless the music is so ridiculously good that I'm able to overlook it. Any recommendations?

Thanks, dooooom brothers (and any sisters, if you're still around)!

I don't know many funeral doom bands. I wish I knew a few more. I have heard a few though and some of my favorites are Tyranny and Wormphlegm. Ahab's first album is probably my favorite funeral doom album I've come across.

Laughing Good question. This particular label tends to describe the slowest, most crushing doom out there. The pace rarely rises above a crawl, the vocals are of the death variety, and there tends to be a bleak, oppressive atmosphere.

Doog, thanks for the heads' up on TYRANNY and WORMPHLEGM (what a ridiculous name!); I've heard them both mentioned before, I'll have to check into 'em. Smile

Thanks for the heads up, not my cup of tea. In my old age I like melody with my heavy riffage.

I was thinking that some with clear vocals fit too, like While Heaven Wept, that definitely has a funereal sound.......

You may be right, Steve... Any time I've heard something described specifically as "funeral doom" there are death vocals in the mix, but I imagine (unless it's plagued by genre-nazis like black metal tends to be) that a band could have the glacial heaviness, snail-pace, and totally depressing vibe, and throw clean vocals in the mix too. That would probably be kind of cool actually.

Funeral Doom does not, as a rule, have much in the way of clean vocals...although some bands will use them a little bit...here are some bands to check out...

AHAB
ESOTERIC
EVOKEN
WORSHIP
MORGION
MOURNFUL CONGREGATION
ASTRAL SLEEP
SHAPE OF DESPAIR
WRECK OF THE HESPERUS
dISEMBOWELMENT

No problem...the new PANTHEIST album is a Funeral Doom album with some varying influences...I highly reccomend it...and SHAPE OF DESPAIR is one of my faves...the vocalist is Pasi from (ex)AMORPHIS...one of the best growlers on the planet...

Cool, that's not the first time I've heard SHAPE OF DESPAIR mentioned in a positive light. I'll add them to the list... Thanks again!
