PostSubject: Favorite BLACK SABBATH covers/tributes...   Wed Jul 18, 2007 12:24 pm

There are TONS of them. Which ones do you think did them justice?

A few of my favorite covers:

KYUSS - Into the Void
PRIMUS - N.I.B.
JOHN TESH w/ AZ/DZ - The Wizard (priceless!)
CORROSION OF CONFORMITY - Lord of This World
CATHEDRAL - Wheels of Confusion
CATHEDRAL - Solitude
FAITH NO MORE - War Pigs (studio version)
ICED EARTH - Black Sabbath
SCREAMING TREES - Tomorrow's Dream
MEGADETH - Never Say Die
SLEEP - Snowblind

SLEEP - Lord of This World
FORSAKEN - Neon Knights
LAST CHAPTER - Children of the Sea

SPIRIT CARAVAN - Wicked World

As far as tribute albums go, there have been almost 30 different tributes released to date with a WIDE range of styles available. I've been checking out many of them lately and I tend to prefer the oddball ones over the typical metal tributes. Goofball

The Kind of Black jazz tribute by THE CASUALTIES OF JAZZ is stellar and quite possibly the best overall tribute album I've heard yet. It's a jazz trio made up of a drummer, upright bassist and an organist playing a Hammond B3. Sabbath's stuff was full of jazz influences, especially in the beginning, so this tribute really brings out some cool nuances in their music!

I'm also checking out IRON HORSE's bluegrass tribute (Black & Bluegrass) right now, which is a hoot! As Steve Martin said, "Yyou just can't be sad when you're playing or listening to banjo!" How right he is! Laughing

Other oddball tributes include Lullaby versions, Indian/Hindu versions, Acoustic version w/ female vox, String Quartet versions, Folk versions, Electronic versions and a Medieval tribute played entirely on authentic period instruments and sung completely in Latin! Awesome! Big Smile

Frown I did not know that Spirit Caravan did Wicked World, well you got me back for the wind breaking thread Trog, now I'm crying. From what I've heard, and yes I am biased since I once had the chance to be their vocalist,I really think Last Chapter nailed "Children Of The Sea".Also,I really liked the Mood cover of LITW.

Yes, I was surprised when I found it also. It exists only on a 2 disc comp called Sucking the 70's, which features several current doom & stoner bands covering hard rock standards of that era.

Here's a link for ya: http://www.amazon.com/Sucking-70s-Various-Artists/dp/samples/B00006O0PQ/ref=dp_tracks_all_1/002-1959427-7037648?ie=UTF8&qid=1184789401&sr=1-2#disc_1

You had a chance to sing for Last Chapter? Huh? What happened? And whatever happened to those guys anyway? They just disappeared...

Didn't you read my bio! LOL yeah, its kind of my "claim to fame".John told me they were looking for a singer and I tried out. They were all great guys,in particular guitarist Darrin Davis who was an AWESOME enough soul to be willing to pick me up and give my no car butt a RIDE to practice! My voice wasn't exactly what they were looking for but they were willing to work with me.Due to the #$%&*! Dallas/Fort Worth traffic it just wasn't possible for him to do it ,we tried a few times but there just wasn't enough time left to pick me up and make it to Arlington where they practiced.I told them from the beginning after I heard them play that no matter what happened I would be a fan.In the process I became friends with them ,yes its true ,I actually got to sing some of the awesome lyrics of Last Chapter with the band behind me in practice,of all the great shows I have ever seen, that was my finest DOOM moment! I am truly both proud but humbled to say that if you have a copy of the Last Chapter cds it is my name that is given a special thanks in the credits.I don't know the exact details but after vox Shawn Green left the band decided to call it a day, then shortly after ,Cody quit and moved away .

Laughing Yeah,if you're really bored it might make for some interesting reading.Seriously though ,I really have been blessed to have met some cool people and been involved in some cool events. After auditioning for Last Chapter, the next coolest purely personal moment would be thanks to equip. failure Roger Rose played through my Crate at the Mad/Rose show at the Salvation Army gym in Irving.Third took place at the same place wildly enough when Mortification presented to me mid -show a Saint Vitus cap.

Nah, that was the first Sabbath cover I ever heard that was done by a Xian band, Yay! so I love it for that reason alone - despite the style not quite being my personal cup of meat. Veddy interrresting

I will say however, that my dissatisfaction with their version was directly responsible for me doing my own version on the first TD album. Troggish

Here is what I lvoe about that version..

Mike Grato's bass playing. I love that humming, groovin bass style ala Geezer, Jack Cassidy, Ron Holzner, etc

Also th eguitars had sledge power. I liked the balls on there.

my fav. is an odd cover.

alex skolnick, guitarist for testament and savatage, formed a jazz trio which covers a lot of old rock and metal tunes. on their first cd they cover "war pigs". quite sick.

I have that one. Very cool. If you like Sabbath given the jazz treatment, check out Kind of Black by THE CASUALTIES OF JAZZ. It's the best Sab tribute I've yet heard. A jazz trio made up of a drummer, upright bassist and an organist on a Hammond B3. Smooth. Smile
