I'm actually not a huge fan of them myself, but I do like some of their stuff.

If Mark (aka candlemass, The Changeling) were here more often, I'm sure we'd be hearing more about them. He's a big fan.

They are probably THE innovators of the epic doom genre of course. I
respect this band, but I'm not a huge fan for the same reason I'm not a
huge Dio fan. WHAT THE HECK ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT ALL THE TIME?????? I
understand that they're trying to create an aura ... but seriously,
their lyrics SOUND good at first glance, but they really aren't SAYING
anything with their music.

That said, I do from time to time enjoy early C-mass. I've also got the
Nemesis - Day of Retribution release, which I'd recommend if you
haven't heard it.

I think that Candlemass is kind of doom's entry in the "music as art" category.Their lyrics are more like storytelling, dark fantasy as opposed to more trad. doom fare. From what I've read about the new one with Robert from SA though ,.it sounds like Leif may be looking more inward this time.In an interview with my former coll. at Harder Beat ,he's talking about the material on KOTGI being lyrically influenced by the last few years with Marcolin, described by him as "hell".By the way ,I visited the Candlemass.se site and it has a forum that looks pretty cool so I joined.WAY UP!

I agree with you. Like I said, I pile them in with Dio ... I find that there's music out there that sounds very similiar and yet is so much more relevant to actual reality. Not that I dislike either band. I just don't really listen to them much for those reasons.

Huh? Sigh Yeah its going to be interesting to see what Leif has written lyricwise.I've known Robert casually since 91 and we had a few conv. about lyrics,he's a big Trouble fan and from the conv. we had I thought the SA lyrics were going to be more positive, but they are really bleak compared to Lyle's.You just never know,Lyle was the one into darker bands and his words had vague glints of hope in the earlier stuff, just shows ...what do I know?

Well, reality can sometimes.......suck! Wich is why fantasy lit is so popular. Haven't picked this one up yet, I'm sure it's at least solid.

Yeah,I agree,I generally kind of "keep one foot in reality and one foot in fantasy" so to speak. To me ,Sabbath, for example is like that. Some times I'm in the mood for the truth in your face lyrics and raw sound of Ozzy Sab, and sometimes I just "want to chase the wind" on the riffs of Dio era Sab.On the subject of Candlemass(that is what this thread is about after all,LOL) its really wild how epic doom has kind of come full circle.Candle is very near the originator of the style, and the sound and name of Solitude Aeturnus is directly influenced by them. Now the originators have called upon the musical followers to assist them, that is what I like about doom, its kind of an extended family really and most of the guys are cool that play it.

I absolutely agree with you here.

@ C-mass: Yes I also agree with your post. Like I said, I don't dislike either band. That would be hypocritical since there ARE some bands that I listen to that could be considered an escape from reality in the same way.

I'll take a look. When I need an epic doom fix, though, I go for Reverend Bizzarre. LordTsebaoth

It's not only Candlemass, i think pure doom metal bands (the one you call 'traditional doom' which i don't agree with the term), even new ones are suffering from these ghosts, wizards, pentagram, dark evil sorcerers lyrical content in their songs. Ok, paying tributes is nice... but sometimes too much.

Agreed. Another subject that comes up too much is the term 'Witchfinder
General'. I mean, it's a cool concept ... once or twice ... but when
about 15 bands have a song referencing it ... it gets a little old. Of
course the ones that did it FIRST will always be the best Winky

Grim Reaper Understandable, but when doing reviews for example, you can't just say "doom",nobody will know what you are talking about.Terms are a necessary evil if you will,IMO,though this is a good thing,it means that there is more variety soundwise.Lyrically, well you basically have a few categories to choose from, most doom involves

1.DEPRESSION
2.RELIGION(of some sort)
3.FANTASY
4.MAGIC
5.DRUGS
6.WAR

Gloom is right on the Witchfinder thing, though most of those were in the 80's I think except for Cathedral. In the end though you have to face it,what would doom be without the Halloween elements LOL !

Not saying I don't like that stuff. Just that originality is
appreciated. Of course having influences will always be a necessity,
though. In the end it all comes down to taste! LordTsebaoth
