PostSubject: Bang and Buffalo   Sun Apr 27, 2008 11:55 pm

A lot of you probabley know these bands, but I mentioned them last week, and I always feel bad that I never specify which of their albums to get, as they both had extremely uneven catalogues, and if you start in the wrong place you could easily be put off and never find the gems.
For anyone who doesn't know, these two bands (first Bang in Texas, then Buffalo in Australia) were the first two pure, Sabbath influenced "stoner bands". Sure, there were a whole bunch of stoned bands before that, but these were the first two to use obvious and overt Sabbath influences that I know of. But what made them more than Sabbath sound alikes is that both bands dispensed with the Sabbath's occult imagery; and instead added a biker rock'n roll grittyness to create stoner rock as we know it.
But as I said, it's not all good. In fact these bands followed a similar trajectory. Bang's first album "Death of a Country" is so bad it went un-released until a few years ago. And Buffalo's first, "Dead Forever" has a few good songs, but doesn't have the stoner sound yet.
Then come the classics...Bang's S/T and "Mother/Bow to the King"are pure stoner classics, full of Iommiesque riffs; and Buffalo's "Volcanic Rock" and "Only Want You For Your Body" could fit in the NWOBHM if it wasn't only 1974.
Strangley both bands then made complete U-turns. Bang's "Music" is a nice general rock album that grows on you slowly, but it's not very heavy, in fact I detect a Beatles influence at times. And Buffalo's "Mother's Choice" while very loud is just a pure Rock & Roll album (loud 50's R&R like The Pirates); fun but nowhere near stonerville or Sabbath.
Buffalo's last album, "Average Rock & Roller" has only one good song, and Bang's other unrelesed stuff I've never heard, but I assume it's bad too.
So here's where to start with these two pioneering (after Sabbath) stoner bands...

Bang -S/T
Bang -Mother/Bow to the King
Buffalo- Volcanic Rock
Buffalo- Only Want You For Your Body

everything else from them is either risky or downright bad IMO, so be careful!

I have the entire BANG catalogue and I love almost everything they've done. Troggish

I was able to download those two BUFFALO albums you mentioned (a band I have been wanting to hear for a LONG time), so I will be checking them out soon and purchasing actual copies if they're keepers and if they're available. WAY UP!

They just re-released the Buffalo classics in nice digi-paks.

But I hate digipaks...Grumpy

I'll look for the vinyl! It's everything a digipak wants to be but isn't! Big grin

Hey Teargas, have you ever heard POOBAH?

Yeah, digi-paks wear out in about two days, and they don't fit on the shelving right either. I have one by Saracen that has retained every fingerprint that has ever touched it. I hope you can find the wax, because those Buffalo albums rock. One thing they do that I don't like though is they sometimes play riffs out of tune on purpose. That's one Stoner trend I never really enjoyed. In fact their best doom song otherwise (Dune Messiah) is somewhat compromised by this IMO. But it rocks anyway.
I'm surprised you liked all the Bang though, it's pretty diverse. Not all stoner material to my ears.
Poobah? Youngstown's finest. Jimmy Gustofson's band. Yes, I'd have to say that they made their contributions to proto doom (Bowleen) along with Bang and Buffalo. How about the band T-2 "It'll All Work Out in Boomland"? That's a pretty brooding album if I remember right.

Another thing about digi-paks. Animals like to chew the corners off them. I have a large kitten that has chewed the corners off almost all my digi-paks. Twisted Evil

Oh man! Sigh

I seal all of mine in trimmed plastic record sleeves to protect them, but it's a pain in the ass to do.

I grew up in Australia in the 70's and nothing was as heavy as Buffalo for its time, somehow they got pushed aside and AC/DC got all the attention. Don't know why because Buffalo at their peak could wipe the floor with AC/DC, saw Buffalo live for the first time in 74 and 3 more times that year and then they changed line-ups and became very commercial. The best 70's band from Australia by a mile.
