A lot of you probabley know these bands, but I mentioned them last week, and I always feel bad that I never specify which of their albums to get, as they both had extremely uneven catalogues, and if you start in the wrong place you could easily be put off and never find the gems.
For anyone who doesn't know, these two bands (first Bang in Texas, then Buffalo in Australia) were the first two pure, Sabbath influenced "stoner bands". Sure, there were a whole bunch of stoned bands before that, but these were the first two to use obvious and overt Sabbath influences that I know of. But what made them more than Sabbath sound alikes is that both bands dispensed with the Sabbath's occult imagery; and instead added a biker rock'n roll grittyness to create stoner rock as we know it.
But as I said, it's not all good. In fact these bands followed a similar trajectory. Bang's first album "Death of a Country" is so bad it went un-released until a few years ago. And Buffalo's first, "Dead Forever" has a few good songs, but doesn't have the stoner sound yet.
Then come the classics...Bang's S/T and "Mother/Bow to the King"are pure stoner classics, full of Iommiesque riffs; and Buffalo's "Volcanic Rock" and "Only Want You For Your Body" could fit in the NWOBHM if it wasn't only 1974.
Strangley both bands then made complete U-turns. Bang's "Music" is a nice general rock album that grows on you slowly, but it's not very heavy, in fact I detect a Beatles influence at times. And Buffalo's "Mother's Choice" while very loud is just a pure Rock & Roll album (loud 50's R&R like The Pirates); fun but nowhere near stonerville or Sabbath.
Buffalo's last album, "Average Rock & Roller" has only one good song, and Bang's other unrelesed stuff I've never heard, but I assume it's bad too.
So here's where to start with these two pioneering (after Sabbath) stoner bands...
Bang -S/T
Bang -Mother/Bow to the King
Buffalo- Volcanic Rock
Buffalo- Only Want You For Your Body
everything else from them is either risky or downright bad IMO, so be careful!
